Listen as Katie’s mom, Susan, discusses how these kinds of accommodations help her daughter succeed in the general education classroom (time: 0:49).

She does things very fast. Her tests she does very fast, and then she would sit, so they’ve asked if she could go to the library instead of just sitting, because if she sat she does things like bangs on the table, writes on the table, makes loud noises, tries to distract other kids. The other thing she struggles with is, if she doesn’t know the answer to something, she’s more prone to having a tantrum, especially when it’s related to math. They’re trying to get her to learn about her escalation in terms of her emotional behavior She has a break-card that she uses if she needs to go and take a walk, or if she needs to go swing in the swing room. She has a visual schedule and afternoon pack-up routine chart, because often at the end of the day it was just so chaotic.
