The Reading Blues: Strategies to Help Upper-Elementary Students Move From Struggle to Success
|
Perspectives and Resources
There is more than one effective reading method for dealing with this challenge. In this lesson you will have the opportunity to learn about various instructional reading techniques. You are encouraged to select a reading strategy that appeals to you or resembles an idea you wrote down in the previous section.
PALS
In PALS, or Peer Assisted Learning Strategies, students engage in peer tutoring. By working together in pairs, students have many opportunities to practice reading aloud.
CSR
CSR, or Collaborative Strategic Reading, is a strategy to help elementary students with reading comprehension. Students work in small groups to apply comprehension strategies while reading text from a content area, such as social studies.
Pre-referral
Pre-referral intervention is a collaborative effort to assist classroom teachers to help a student who is struggling with reading as well as to assess whether a student should be referred for special education services. (Note that this material is very similar to the pre-referral section in the early reading module.)
