Module: School Nurses: Roles and Responsibilities in the School Setting
Assessment

Please answer the questions below. If you have difficulty answering the questions, go back and review the Perspectives and Resources pages in this module.

  1. What are the seven roles of a school nurse? For each role, list two brief activities in which a school nurse might engage.

  2. Ms. Garcia has been a school nurse for nearly 20 years. She notices more students with severe healthcare needs in public schools now than at any other time in her career. Discuss three reasons why this change might have occurred.

  3. Explain the differences between a Section 504 plan and an IEP, as well as what a school nurse's role is for each.

  4. A teacher approaches you, the school nurse, about a new student who has leukemia. Describe at least three ways you could use your networking knowledge and skills to help this teacher to gather information.

  5. Davis has sickle-cell anemia. As a result, he is reluctant to exert himself during PE class, for fear of triggering a crisis. The PE teacher feels that Davis is unmotivated and uses his health condition as an excuse to get out of class. Explain how the school nurse, using the two main activities involved in advocating for students, could address this situation.

  6. Consider again Davis's case from the question above. How can a school nurse establish and maintain collaborative relationships with the Davises, other school personnel, and community professionals in order to enhance Davis's learning outcomes?
