Activity: Pairing Students
It’s time to pair your students! Your class roster is to the left with the students listed in order according to their scores on a recent reading assessment. Using the method described on Resource Page 8, click on each student’s name and drag it to a set of desks.
(Move a student to a different set of desks or back to the list by dragging.)

You should have paired your students as follows:
- Meghan/ Sofija
- Jason/ Andrew
- Katie/ Seth
- Braden/ Micah
- Pedro/ Joseph
- Calla/ Jazema*
- Niki / Rosa*
- Hayden/ Logan
- Coleton/ Jaren
- Sam/ Kailey
- This is a personal preference. Rationales may include the following:
- Creating a seating arrangement in which partners are seated next to one another will eliminate the need for students to move around the classroom to join their reading partners.
- Selecting one student from each pair to move to his or her partner for a PALS session may create a disruption. To limit noise and chaos, the teacher should train the students to move quickly and quietly with their materials in two minutes or less.
- *Niki and Calla had the same scores and either could have been paired with Jazema. However, given that Niki and Jazema often talk, the better choice is to pair Calla with Jazema and Niki with Rosa.
- There are several options:
- A higher-performing reader might read independently for the session, and Kailey can be paired with the higher-performing reader’s partner.
- Kailey might join another pair of students to form a triad.
- If a student from another classroom is engaged in PALS but does not have a partner for the day, he or she might join the class for the PALS session and partner with Kailey.
