Develop a better understanding of asthma and its impact on student learning.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children, affecting over six million children in the United States. Despite the common occurrence of asthma, many educators might not be aware of how the disease can affect students’ learning. If not managed, asthma can have a profound impact on a child’s education. For instance, asthma can lead to chronic absenteeism, poor attention in the classroom, and limited participation in physical activities. To better meet the needs of students with asthma, educators should have a general understanding of asthma characteristics and the types of services that can be provided to support these students.

1. Have students review the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America website.
2. As a whole group or in small groups, discuss the following.
   1. What are the symptoms and triggers of asthma?
   2. How might this condition affect student learning and participation in school?
   3. How are students with asthma protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act?
   4. As a teacher, what do you think you can do to support missed learning opportunities?
   5. In January of 2021, the School-Based Allergies and Asthma Management Program Act (H. R. 2468) was signed into law. What does this law entail, and how will it help students with asthma?
