Narrator: What is “behavior” and how do you “manage” it? Mr. Medina wants to know. His fourth-period history class is misbehaving. He wants them to cool it, but he’s afraid of coming across as a square.
What exactly is “misbehavior” and how should he deal with it? Mr. Medina wants to know that, too. Lately his students seem to be acting out in all kinds of ways. Although some raise their hands and appear eager to participate, others are totally tuned out. Some seem to be pushing boundaries, showing disrespect. Are they challenging his authority, is he being too uptight, or do they just have other things going on in their lives?
One day, grooving to some new tunes with his teacher pal Rick, Mr. Medina wonders aloud about classroom behavior. Rick says Mr. Medina should mellow out, man. The answer to behavior issues is to be cool…the kids dig cool teachers and behave better for them. Of course, some people say good teaching prevents behavior issues, but that just doesn’t make sense.
In a few days, Mr. Medina will start a unit about the woman’s suffrage movement. It’s out of sight, and he really wants his students to be able to learn. But how can he get them to settle down and pay attention? Mr. Medina isn’t sure.
