Deborah Delatorre is new to Macy Middle School and new to teaching fifth graders. For the last twenty years, she taught fourth graders at a private elementary school, and this will be her first year teaching at a public school. During orientation, Ms. Delatorre met individually with staff members, including the school counselor, Mr. Young. He shared some information regarding school policies and procedures. During the conversation, Mr. Young mentioned the school’s pre-referral process and said they would discuss this in more detail soon. Although Ms. Delatorre is largely unfamiliar with the specifics of pre-referral, she recalls hearing something about it and thinks that it may have something to do with students with disabilities. Her last school had a system for supporting students with and without disabilities, but it was not a formal process. She wonders what she needs to know about pre-referral, and she recognizes that she has a lot to learn in her new job.
