School Nurses: Roles and Responsibilities in the School Setting (Archived)

Assessment

Take some time now to answer the following questions. Please note that the IRIS Center does not collect your Assessment responses. If this is a course assignment, you should turn them in to your professor using whatever method he or she requires. If you have trouble answering any of the questions, go back and review the Perspectives & Resources pages in this module.

  1. nurse at computerWhat are the seven roles of a school nurse? For each role, briefly list two activities in which a school nurse might engage.
  2. Ms. Garcia has been a school nurse for nearly 20 years. She notices more students with severe healthcare needs in public schools now than at any other time in her career. Discuss three reasons why this change might have occurred.
  3. Explain the differences between a Section 504 plan and an IEP, as well as what a school nurse’s role is for each.
  4. A teacher approaches you, the school nurse, about a new student who has leukemia. Describe at least three ways you could use your networking knowledge and skills to help this teacher to gather information.
  5. Davis has sickle-cell anemia. As a result, he is reluctant to exert himself during PE class for fear of triggering a crisis. The P.E. teacher feels that Davis is unmotivated and uses his health condition as an excuse to get out of class. Explain how the school nurse, using the two main activities involved in advocating for students, could address this situation.
  6. Consider again Davis’s case from the question above. How can a school nurse establish and maintain collaborative relationships with his family, other school personnel, and community professionals in order to enhance Davis’s learning outcomes?
